Tourism Research Australia released its State of the Industry 2021 report this week, providing data and insights on how Australia’s visitor economy has emerged from the pandemic, and the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. The report reveals that total visitor spend is down 42 per cent compared with pre-pandemic levels, but up 14 per cent compared with 2020. Domestic tourism is faring better than international, with the number of domestic overnight trips up 13 per cent on 2020 and the average length of stay and average spend per trip also increasing. International visitor arrivals have increased sharply since borders reopened, however a full recovery in international tourism is expected to take some time. Following the release of the report, the new Minister for Trade and Tourism, Don Farrell said the Government is focused on getting the visitor economy on the path to recovery. He confirmed a number of pre-election commitments, including the new funding to attract workers to Australia’s tourism industry, which Australian Chamber – Tourism has been a key advocate for.
