Employment & skills update | 24 June 2022

23 Jun 2022

Recent research indicates that Australian employers may be missing out on significant opportunity to address labour and skills shortages and broaden their workforce, due to lack of awareness about the tools available to support people with disability at work. JobAccess’s national survey, Understanding Disability and the Australian Workplacerevealed that 70 per cent of Australians haven’t heard of workplace adjustments, while 66 per cent of people with disability were not aware of the concept. Thirty-five per cent said that talking about workplace adjustments with an employee is outside their comfort zone, while 61 per cent are unsure or do not know how to arrange workplace adjustments for a person with disability.

It is clear there is scope to support more people with disability to get into work, while supporting employers to recruit and retain these valuable staff, and it is something ACCI has been a strong advocate for. Developing guidance for small business owners on what is possible job task wise for people with different disabilities and how work can be easily modified to accommodate this as needed was a key recommendation in our submission on the new Disability Employment Support Model, as well in our ongoing discussions as a member of the Disability Employment Support Reference Group. Members who would like to further discuss barriers and opportunities are encouraged to get in touch.
