Tourism Research Australia releases National Visitor Survey

This week, Tourism Research Australia released the National Visitor Survey for the March quarter 2022.  The results show that while the industry is gradually recovering, the tourism sector still has a long way to go until it returns to its pre-pandemic levels. Quarterly results were up on the same period in 2021, with overnight spend up 14 per cent. However compared with March 2020 levels, overnight spend is down 20 per cent, overnight trips are down 27 per and nights on trip has also fallen 21 per cent.

Domestic tourism was the main contributor to tourism spend in the year ending March 2022, contributing 96 per cent of total tourism spend. While this is unsurprising considering Australia’s international borders reopened on 21 February,  forward bookings data highlights that international travel is still tracking well below 2019 levels. There is also a significant decrease in visitation during the period of August – November 2022. It is clear that more needs to be done to compete with other countries for tourists, and Australian Chamber – Tourism has been advocating for a number of initiatives including the refunding tourist visa fees to make Australia a more cost competitive destination and drive much-needed international demand.
