Election commitments delivered
This week the Minister for Education announced funding for an additional 20,000 university students. The additional places will be allocated over two years from the start of 2023 with an investment of up to $485.5 million over the next four years. The key areas that will be targeted will be those facing skills shortages such as education, health, engineering, and technology. Higher education providers will competitively bid for allocations of places, with the application processes opening this month.

Minister O’Connor announced $100 million for apprentices undertaking clean energy apprenticeships over the next four years to support 10,000 apprentices who will receive $2,000 every six months for the duration of their course.

ACTU skills policy document
This week the ACTU released its skills policy document ahead of the Jobs and Skills Summit, see here. In it are calls for 70 per cent of funding for VET to be given to TAFEs, increasing the Temporary Skilled Migration Income Threshold to $90,000, a 50 per cent wage subsidy for apprentices with 25 per cent to the employer and 25 per cent to the apprentice and for the adult age for apprentices to be reduced to 18 years.  These recommendations stand in polar oppisite to ACCI’s views and members should take note ahead of the summit.
