Employment White Paper
Following the Jobs and Skills Summit, the government has opened consultation on the Employment White Paper. This next stage should provide a roadmap to address the labour and skills shortages in all industries.
The Terms of Reference for the Review can be found on the Treasury website, with submissions due on the 30th of November. ACCI will be preparing a detailed submission and will begin discussion with member shortly on the key core recommendations we will be proposing in the submission
Meeting with Minister O’Connor
On Wednesday, ACCI CEO Andrew McKellar, Chief of Policy David Alexander and Senior Policy Advisor Natalie Heazlewood met with Minister for Skills and Training Brendan O’Connor at Parliament House. The meeting was the first opportunity ACCI has had for a one-on-one meeting since the Minister attended ACCI’s General Council meeting in August. At the meeting ACCI emphasised the importance of ongoing apprenticeship subsidies for employers in the first year of the apprenticeship at the rate of 30 per cent to ensure the business case stacks up for employers. The Minister is concerned about the rates of completion. He acknowledged that there were many factors explaining the completion rates, but still wants to see some additional work in the space to increase the completion rate. The Minister is focused on the signing of the two new VET agreements; one for next year for 180,000 new fee-free TAFE places and then the new five-year National Agreement for Skills and Workforce Development (NASWD). Initial conversations with the states and territories are promising. They are hopeful the interim Jobs and Skills Australia legislation will be passed in the Senate in the first week of November.
