Employment and skills update | 3 February, 2023

Jobs and Skills Australia
In early January, the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations released a Jobs and Skills Australia (JSA) discussion paper. The paper contains a brief overview about the ongoing arrangements of JSA, ahead of permanent arrangements being finalised. The discussion paper is focused on the areas of functions and ways of working for JSA’s ongoing operations. Submissions close 5pm, February 10.

The discussion paper is very light on detail and some of our key areas of interest have not been addressed to date. ACCI will make a submission after a draft is sent to members.  Information can found on the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations’ website.

Australian Apprenticeship Priority List
The government has published an updated Australian Apprenticeships Priority List.  The list has increased from 77 to 111 occupations; the size of the list highlights the need for proper reform in this area. Some of the new occupations that have been added are vehicle body builders, gardeners, electronic equipment trades workers, screen printers, swimming coaches, shearers, veterinary nurses and travel consultants. This means the newly added occupations will be eligible for higher apprentice and traineeship incentives to employers for all new commencements from January 1, 2023. See the updated list here
