Budget brief with Minister O’Connor
ACCI attended a briefing on budget night run by Skills and Training Minister Brendan O’Connor and the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations. It was an opportunity to hear directly from the minister about the skills measures that are in the budget. This budget implements previously announced funding of $3.7 billion for the five-year National Skills Agreement, which will begin in January 2024. The agreement will fund vocational education and training across the country. ACCI has been advocating for the agreement and calling for additional funding from the states and territories.
There is also new funding for more fee-free TAFE and vocational education places targeted at the government’s key priority areas. This announcement completes the government’s election commitment of 465,000 places fee-free TAFE places when combined with the 180,000 fee-free places funded in 2023. Of these, 15,000 were carried over from the previous government
