Employment Summit

ACCI have held initial meetings with Brendan O’Connor’s office, the new Minister for Skills and Training. We have been told that the government is likely to hold its employment summit during the first week of September.  ACCI will be involved in the setting of the summit with early indications that there will be various streams including a skill stream. At this stage it appears the CEOs and board chairs will be invited to attend on behalf of peak bodies.

Jobs and Skills Australia

During the election, Labor committed to abolishing the National Skills Commission (NSC) and creating a new agency called Jobs and Skills Australia (JSA) with the aim of driving VET education and increase workforce planning between employers, unions and education providers. We have been told that the government are looking to introduce the legislation in the first session of parliament to abolish the NSC and replace it with an interim JSA and new CEO. The JSA will be discussed at the summit with a consultation process helping to design the final form and functions of JSA.
