April overseas arrivals and departures data

Data released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics this week notes that short-term visitors in April 2024 increased by 8.8 per cent compared to April last year. Although the figures represent an increase from April 2023 levels, they are still significantly lower (15.3 per cent) than in April 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic.

China remains the second leading source country for short-term visitor arrivals behind New Zealand despite allowing travel to Australia for close to 18 months. However, China’s inbound recovery has continued, with close to double the number of arrivals in April 2024 compared to April 2023.
