National Visitor Survey results for March 2023 released this week show nights away and spend exceeding pre-pandemic levels. However, overnight trips were down. The report for Tourism research Australia is HERE.

Domestic tourism spend was up 32 per cent ($2.1 billion) on March 2019 to $8.5 billion. This was generated by 31.7 million visitors nights away in this period up 4 per cent compared to March 2019. There were 9.5 million overnight trips, down 5 per cent on March 2019.

The strong spend results in March 2023 were driven by increased spending across all major expenditure items. The largest increases were on, accommodation, food and drinks and petrol.

There were strong spend results in all state and territories except for the Northern Territory. The highest increase was in Victoria, which was up $596 million or 40 per cent. Results for trips were weaker, down in all state and territories except for South Australia. The largest decrease was in Queensland, down 245,000 or 12 per cent.
