Cyber Security: the role of businesses in helping to build a more resilient Australia

As we become more aware of online threats, businesses are finding that investment in risk management and critical infrastructure is crucial to driving behavioural change. As part of our continued efforts to address the key issues facing Australian businesses, ACCI is pleased to invite members to our upcoming event. One of the Australian Government’s leading cybersecurity officials Dr Derek Bopping, First Assistant Director-General Cyber Engagement and Strategy of the Australian Cyber Security Centre (ACSC), will deliver a keynote address.

The ACSC sits within the Australian Signals Directorate (ASD), a key national security agency. Dr Bopping, as head of the ACSC’s Cyber Engagement and Strategy Division, leads the ASD’s strategy and relations with industry, international partners, government and the media.

Following his keynote, Dr Bopping will be joined in a panel discussion with Sarah Hosey, General Manager Security and Privacy Assurance, Risk and Consulting from nbn, Mallika Sathi, Vice President, Cyber & Intelligence and Digital Identity from MasterCard and Richa Arora, Partner, Cyber and Digital Trust and PwC Australia. Philippa CogswellCybersecurity Partner from PwC Australia will moderate the panel discussion.

Dr. Derek Bopping, First Assistant Director-General, Cyber Engagement and Strategy Division

Dr Bopping leads the Australian Cyber Security Centre’s Cyber Engagement and Strategy Division, which coordinates the Australian Signals Directorate’s strategy and relations with industry, international partners, government and the media.

Derek was formerly the Deputy Counter-Terrorism Coordinator, overseeing the design and implementation of Australia’s federal counter-terrorism laws, and has worked as an independent consultant focusing on the insurance and business interruption implications of cyber risk.

Between 2015 and 2019, Derek led the Department of Home Affairs’ engagement with the US government on terrorism, immigration and border management policy from Washington, D.C.

He served as senior liaison to the Hon. Scott Morrison MP while the Minister for Immigration and Border Protection and to General Angus Campbell during Operation Sovereign Borders.

He holds a PhD in social psychology from the Australian National University.
