ACCI invited members to hear directly from Professor Peter Dawkins AO, Director of Jobs and Skills Australia (JSA).
Dawkins spoke to attendees about how JSA is using real-world analysis and testing and a suite of products and analytical tools to create a roadmap for the future of skills. Dawkins shared JSA’s conceptual plan of work and shared details about the top occupations in demand and the skills pressures each category faces respectively. The Q&A was moderated by ACCI chief executive, Andrew McKellar.

Prof. Peter Dawkins AO, Director, Jobs and Skills Australia
Professor Peter Dawkins AO was appointed as the Director of Jobs and Skills Australia in December 2022, following its establishment on November 2022 under interim legislation, to provide independent advice to government on current and emerging workforce needs in order to meet the skills needs of a thriving economy. Jobs and Skills Australia is a secondary statutory authority attached to the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations (DEWR). In this role he is directly accountable to the Minister for Skills and Training, the Hon. Brendan O’Connor.
Peter is an Emeritus Professor of Economics at the Mitchell Institute for Education and Health Policy at Victoria University where he was the Vice-Chancellor and President from 2011 until 2020. His central area of expertise as an economist is in labour market economics. His policy research and advice has been especially focussed on labour markets, education and training.
Andrew McKellar, Chief Executive Officer, Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry
Andrew McKellar is the chief executive of the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI) – the nation’s largest business organisation, representing employers of every size and sector in Canberra, across the country, and around the globe.
Under Andrew’s leadership, ACCI champions policies that enable businesses to innovate, invest, and grow, promoting Australia’s economic strength and international competitiveness.
Previously, Andrew served as secretary general for mobility at the Federation Internationale de l’Automobile, based in Paris; chief executive of the Australian Trucking Association; chief executive of the Australian Automobile Association; and chief executive of the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries.
Earlier in his career, Andrew worked in government, serving as a senior adviser to successive federal industry ministers. He also worked in the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet, and Commonwealth and Queensland treasuries.
Andrew holds a Bachelor of Economics from the Australian National University.
