ACCC call for lower energy costs welcomed by Australian Chamber

11 Jul 2018 |

Calls for reforms to bring down energy prices by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) have been welcomed by the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

“The Australian Chamber has long argued prices simply must come down,” Australian Chamber CEO, James Pearson, said today.

“As recently as yesterday we were hearing of businesses that were having to choose between paying their power bills and hiring more people – that is an utterly unsustainable situation.

Mr Pearson said while the Australian Chamber is still working through the detail, the Chamber’s first impressions are that the ACCC recommendations are sensible, including measures such as:

  • Improving transparency and competitiveness of retail offers
  • Greater contract transparency
  • Giving the regulator “sharper teeth”

“Costs must come down. That’s the bottom line for business and households.

“The ACCC’s recognises that restoring affordability will require wide ranging and comprehensive action.

“We congratulate the ACCC Commissioner Rod Sims and his team on this important report.”
